To B DA GLV, You Must Understand the Love

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” 1 John 4:16

This whole “B DA GLV” idea was very appealing to me right from the start. I mean what Christian doesn’t want to be more loving, more able to make a difference in the world, more available to be used my God? Isn’t that what we’re here for?

I recognized pretty early on that I was missing something… something huge. When I would set out to have a “glove-filled” day, a great desire to make a difference in the lives of those that the Lord put in my path, it wouldn’t take long before I’d crash and burn. Even with the best intentions I was back to the “world of me” where others are just an inconvenient interruption.

Initially I thought it was just a lack of love on my part. Perhaps I just didn’t have it in the “sacrificial love” department. But eventually I realized I was missing far more than the depth of love and skill it took to love others the way I felt the Lord wanted me to. I was missing the enormity and intimacy of GOD’S LOVE …for me!

Now that may sound incredibly arrogant and self-absorbed (a trip to the “world of me” – how fun for you) but please don’t let that distract you from the point.

I could not – and cannot – love others unless and until I truly KNOW what it means to be a recipient of His love! Somehow over the years I had tuned out to that life-changing and powerfully transforming love that the God of the universe chose to bestow on me. I knew God loved me and wouldn’t hesitate to tell anyone who asked. But I may as well have said, “My cat loves me.” (My cat doesn’t even know my name!!!) I had completely lost sight of what it meant to be LOVED BY GOD!

So I began a journey of rediscovering that love and I continue to pursue it. I want to know that love intimately because it’s who my God is. He is LOVE. If I don’t come to know who HE is how can I ever expect to share Him with others. How about you? How well do you know Him and His love for you?
